The Azad Hind stamps were printed in Germany at the State Printing Works, Berlin from a design prepared by the firm of Aster-Heudtlass. Millions of stamps were printed intended for sale in India. However the stamps were never delivered and stayed in the State Printing Works until the end of World War II. These are trial proofs of the one Rupee stamp which went through printing thrice, once for every colour on the tricoloured Indian flag. These stamps were imperforated and only a small quantity containing the orange colour were gummed. The red two anna imperforated stamp on the top left corner of the facing page was printed for the Andaman and Nicobar islands, which was under the control of the Subhas Chandra Bose led Provisional Government of Azad Hind. Half a million stamps printed for theAndaman and Nicobar Islands remained undelivered as well. The remaining are general issue imperforated stamps printed at the State Printing Works in 1943. One million copies of each stamp was printed and these stamps contained surcharges. These too were undelivered.
