This certificate is kept as a family memento as Mr Gwee Choon Gui (魏春贵 or Wei Chun Gui) was appointed as the Special Committee Member of the Lam Ann Association （南安会馆）in 2000. It sheds light on the diverse roles of the individual. Mr Gwee is the brother of Mr Gwee Bock Huat and they are both co-owners of the Sin Sai Hong Opera troupe（新赛凤剧团）. In the late 19th century, clan associations such as the Lam Ann Association or the Hokkien Huay Kuan （福建会馆）were set up to look after the welfare of Chinese migrants in Singapore though its role has been pretty much transformed in post war Singapore. The troupe was first established in 1910 using another name and was performing gaojiaxi （高甲戏） back then. The troupe changed its name to “Sin Sai Hong” in 1936 and changed to performing gezaixi （歌仔戏） which was gaining popularity in the 1930s. It is the oldest Hokkien Opera Troupe in Singapore. The Sin Sai Hong collection donated to the National Museum also consists of old photographs, certificates and costumes.
