Portrait of a European

This portrait in opaque watercolours shows a European figure, probably a Portuguese, tweaking his mustache and gazing over his left shoulder. He wears a European style hat and a robe fashioned from Persian or Chinese imported cloth, secured at the waist by a gold stripped belt. A walking cane rests casually on his left shoulder. The image is mounted in a Mughal album page, the borders embellished with sprinkled gold. It was probably painted in Mughal India in the 17th century. On the reverse is a page of calligraphy in the Persian nasta'liq script, relating to Shaykh Abu Sa'id Abi'l-Khayr, a Persian Sufi and poet. Also included are quotations from the poetry of Amir Khusraw Dehlavi, another famous Persian Sufi.
