Traditional south Indian jewellery was crafted to complement the shape and structure of the parts of the body, from head to toe. Such elaborate hair ornaments were worn, on either side of the forehead. Here a gem - set peacock occupies central space situated within a circle of rubies. This barrette is an heirloom made for Dr.R.D.Gangatharan’s maternal great aunt, Ms.Amballigay who arrived in Singapore from Saigon (Vietnam) in early 20th century. The use of the French word for the clasp by the collector is a remnant of the French influence on Indians who lived in the French colonies in India and Southeast Asia.
