This European-style gaming table was made in Indonesia, probably for a Dutch client living in the region. The surface is designed for tric-trac, a game similar to backgammon that originated in France. Tables like this one appear in many 18th-century Dutch inventories of estates in Batavia (now Jakarta). The long box in the centre is for storing the game pieces. The burls of the amboyna wood, native to Indonesia, used in the construction add interest and elegance to the surfaces of the table.
