This type of lug-handled storage jar is often called a ‘Martaban Jar’, after the port town of Martaban on the Andaman Sea on the southern coast of Myanmar, the most likely origin of this piece. With its rich brown glaze, paddle-beaten coils just under the surface, and raised slip trails this piece may have attempted to emulate metal ware objects of the period. These jars have a history dating back to at least the 14th century, although glazed ceramics may have been produced in the region as early as the 11th century.
