The Swat valley in present day north-western Pakistan, has had a rich embroidery tradition, bolstered by the ready availability of silk threadby proximity to the ancient Silk Route. Embroidery was the domain of women of the Swat communities, who created items of clothingand home use. This embroidered cloth was most likely intended for use as a bridal pillowcase, and showcases the bright red and pinks, edged with yellow in geometric patterns, that are typical of embroidery from this region. It also displays the voiding technique often seen in Swati embroidery.
