The origins of the Royal Singapore Golf Club can be traced back to 1891, when it first opened as the Singapore Golf Club at the Singapore Sporting Club (later known as the Singapore Turf Club). The opening was graced by then Governor of the Straits Settlements, Sir Cecil Clementi Smith, and his wife. Later in the 1960s the Royal Singapore Golf Club merged with another golf club, the Royal Island Club, to form the Singapore Island Country Club.
