This Singer sewing machine from the 1940s belonged to Grace Linus, mother of the donor, Mrs Elizabeth Mahadevan. It was a gift of love from Grace’s husband, Joseph Linus. Mrs Linus used the machine to sew curtains and clothes for all her three daughters, including Elizabeth. After Mrs Linus’ death, the machine was handed over to Elizabeth, who has also donated a pair of sewing scissors that her mother used with the machine. The items reflect social life from the 1940s to the 1970s when it was common for mothers to sew clothes and other household items for the family, saving household expenses and reflecting the spirit of self-sufficiency and creativity at the same time.
