The painting shows the rite of Ushnishavijaya, meaning ‘crowning victory’. She is the personification of a protective charm. The rite is for longevity, and includes the dedication of a hundred thousand stupas. As is customary in images of this subject, she is situated within the chamber of the large central stupa and surrounded by a myriad of tiny stupas representing the hundred thousand. The main stupa is in the usual Tibetan style. The ‘hundred thousand’ stupas are painted in gold and arranged in ‘cubist’ mandala of coloured squares, each containing a tiny red-coloured deity in the centre.
