Sun Yee (b.1919-2009) received art instruction at the Xinhua Art Academy in Shanghai and the University of Japan in Tokyo. In 1954, Sun Yee settled down in Singapore and immersed herself in the then emerging Malayan art world. During which time she traveled extensively in Malaya, Thailand and Borneo, all of which, left indelible impressions on her. Sun Yee artworks were well received and exhibited internationally in countries like France, Japan, and Singapore. In the 1960s she was well known for the depiction on local and regional botanicals in Chinese ink. Framed in the composition of the scroll format, the local subjects are treated by the Chinese traditional outlining technique (baimiao). Malay Dance (Ronggeng) was produced during the early 1960s when Sun Yee was seeking to localize her pictorial content after settling to Singapore.
