This Buddha is seated on a tiered throne with right hand in the earth-touching gesture. He is adorned with a leafy crown with tall spire-like finial, and elaborate flame-like protrusions on either side. The Buddha also wears beaded necklaces and large earrings. The whole figure is gilded, which was probably applied by devotees as an act of merit-making.The royal attire marks this as an image of Jambhupati; a type of royal Buddha, which became popular in the Ava period (1287 – 1752). This style was inspired by a popular legend in which the Buddha magically transforms his monk’s robes into the resplendent attire of a universal monarch, in order to humble an arrogant king known as Jambhupati.
