This is a pair of white cotton valances that date to the early 20th century with floral motifs embroidered on it. The usage of white embroidery began to find favour amongst Peranakan Chinese women from the early to mid 20th century through the influence of European styles of decoration. Such valances would have been found hanging from brass wedding beds, instead of the more traditional wooden beds.
