Kantha is quilted embroidery done by the women of Bengal, India. The women create bed spreads, wraps and book or mirror covers among others either for domestic use or as gifts. The Kantha are influenced by the rural scenes, city life and modernisation, mythological scenes or depict floral and vine motifs. They are produced from recycled cloth and yarn of old saris. In this example, repetitive creeper-like motifs run from end to end of the textile; flora, fauna and village life being popular subjects in this style of embroidery.
