Standing Crowned Buddha

This standing image of the crowned Buddha, may be an idealised portrait of a Pagan king. The figure wears monk's robes and a pointed bud and leafy crown, which encloses a high coiled top knot. He is adorned with elaborate pendant earrings and a pendant leaf chest ornament. The right hand is held in varada mudra (wish fulfilling gesture), whilst the left is turned inwards against the chest clasping the hem of the diaphanous robe. Traces of black, red and gold lacquer are still visible across the surface. The Pagan kingdom (11th to 13th centuries) produced a flourishing of Buddhist art including murals, bronze, stone, and wood sculptures, and temple buildings. However only a small group of figures from Pagan with this type of leaf-crown have survived.
