This stand comprises nine rectangular bone panels with carved openwork mofits of mythological figures. The dancing figures probably represent characters such as Hanuman (centre) from the Ramayana. The crest and holding plate are also carved and the whole structure is supported by a faceted base with panels incised with floral motifs.Bone and ivory were used to make a wide range of decorative works, including reliquaries, sculpture and furniture such as this stand. The intricately carved motifs, would have originated from popular myths and can be found in various decorative art forms, including laquer and silverware.
