This squat form of offering vessel is known as 'hsun gwet'. The form was constructed with a bamboo frame and woven bamboo walls, which are still visible through the thick cinnabar-red lacquer coating. It is simply decorated, with relief bands of thayo or lacquer putty moulded with saw tooth and twisted orchid spray (thazin gway) motifs, applied around the mouthrim of each tray. The base has an inscription in relief which reads: " Pyay Town. Hsaya Hpyu", denoting the place of manufacture and the name of the maker Master Pyu. The town of Pyay was previously known as Prome, an important centre for lacquer production before the 20th century.
