This gilded bronze figure sits with the right hand in bhumisparsha mudra (earth-calling posture). The tall flame finial and elongated earlobes, and well delineated facial features such as the arched eyebrows, are reminiscent of the much earlier Sukhothai style. The Rattanakosin period (1782 to present) saw the production of elaborate art styles, in this case a finely decorated robe with relief patterns in gilded lacquer. The throne is decorated with multiple Buddha images seated in rows as if to the reinforce the story of Buddha's enlightenment. This image of Buddha is one of the most popular in Southeast Asia, as it signifies the moment in which Buddha reaches to call the earth goddess to witness the countless acts of merit performed in his past lives.
