Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games handover flag

Encased within this frame is a replica of the Summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG) handover flag, otherwise known as the Singapore Flag. The original flag was specially made to commemorate the inaugural YOG held in Singapore between 14 and 26 August 2010. The flag design incorporates the trademark five interlocking Olympic rings and the words ‘Singapore 2010’.The original flag was presented to Singapore’s prime minister Lee Hsien Loong by International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge a day before the start of the event. It was later handed over to Nanjing mayor Ji Jianye at the Games’ closing ceremony as the Chinese city had been chosen to host the next edition of the quadrennial sporting event. The idea to organise a youth edition of the Olympic Games to promote cross-cultural understanding among young athletes was approved by the IOC in 2007. Singapore was eventually chosen to host the first YOG following a bidding process involving 11 candidate cities.
