This chest is an example of a production of lacquer items thought to have been based at Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh. The varnished surface and depicted scenes of pagodas stand between lakes and mountains were derived directly from Cantonese models.Artisans in the region of Canton were known to have produced gold-decorated lacquered furniture as well as personal objects. Chests, such as this, were exported in great numbers to Europe and some may have also found their way to India where local craftsmen tried to reproduce them.
