This cabinet is made of red and gold gilt wood. There are numerous floral motifs are carved along the front of the cabinet doors and the drawers below. The carvings along the bottom of the cabinet are typical of Palembang styles of furniture, with similar wave like patterns found on other types of furniture from that area.Display cabinets such as this from Palembang in Indonesia were used by Peranakan Chinese in the region around the late 19th and early 20th century. They were most likely commissioned as gifts to the bride and groom, as a part of their wedding trousseau and would have been used as storage for either handkerchiefs or clothes.
