This hairpin is decorated with pearls, which is an unusual combination for Peranakan jewellery. Peranakan women traditionally kept their hair very long but will tie the hair up in a bun, called ‘sanggul’, during the course of the day. The ‘sanggul’ will be held in place with the use of hairpins such as this.
