This photograph is part of a series which depicts the sights and scenes of 19th and 20th century Singapore. To celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, buildings were decorated with lights, bunting and flags; arches were erected on main roads and at entrances; and paper crowns and signs with such phrases as ‘God save the Queen’, ‘Long live the Queen’ and ‘Long may she reign’ were put up all across Singapore and Malaya. Festivities, parades, processions and activities were held in Singapore over seven days (30 May 1953 to 6 June 1953) to commemorate this special occasion.
