Batik sarongs, such as this, were worn by nonyas to match their baju panjang and kebaya. Nonyas often preferred to get their sarongs from batik cities on the North Coast of Java, where some of the best workshops can be found. This piece reflects the Peranakan aesthetics for sarongs, a predominance of floral motifs, birds and butterflies.
