This piece of beaded work is decorated with glass beads which were probably imported from Europe. It features the motifs of phoenix and peonies. The phoenix is an auspicious symbol in the Chinese culture representing beauty, grace, high virtue, the bride and the Empress. Likewise, peonies are auspicious symbols that symbolise spring, love, beauty and good fortune. Its size suggests that it may have been used as a pillow cover.
