Daniell, Studies of the Trading Vessels

Thomas Daniell RA and his nephew William were preeminent European painters who documented India for the European eye. While the aquatint prints produced by them are more common, this pencil sketch, by Thomas Daniell, of the East India co. vessel is very rare and unusual. The sketch shows the detailed design of the lord Clive is seen inscribed on the vessel’s bow.The East India Company (EIC) Merchantile Marine was the principal merchant shipping service supporting the company’s trade with India and the Far East, in operation from 1600 to 1834. The vessel under study here, the Lord Clive, was one such East India Ship that sailed between 1763-1765.
