This ebony chair features scrolled openwork back with carved top rails centred by ‘armorini’ above dancing female figures and a ‘makara’ flanked by bird finials. The legs are spirally turned and joined by stretchers on turned feet.Carved ebony chairs were made throughout South and Southeast Asia in the late 17th century particularly Indonesia and Coromandel Coast in India. The furniture produced in Coromandel Coast is constructed of solid ebony, either pierced or carved in relief and with spiral elements, such as the legs. In the late 18th and 19th century, ebony chairs and tables were believed to be surviving examples of early English furniture.
