Recollections of Long Lost Memories

Born in 1969, Malaysia, Ahmad Fuad Osman graduated from University of Technology Mara (UiTM) in 1991. Part of the artist collective MATAHATI with four other artists, Fuad has participated in exhibitions such as MATAHATI: PL (1999), Paintings 1993–2003 (2005), and Encountering Asian Art at the 2nd Pocheon Asia Biennale (2007); his first solo exhibition was Experiments in Truth (1998) held in Malaysia. He was also the recipient of several awards and residencies such as Asian Artist Fellowship from Vermont Studio Center (2004) and Rimbun Dahan residency (2007/2008).‘Recollections of Long Lost Memories’ was produced in 2007, the 50th anniversary of Malaysia’s independence and it was a timely opportunity, which Fuad took, to examine the progress Malaysia had made thus far. He realized that many historical events were forgotten by the people and began to collect old photographs which he then manipulated by inserting an imaginary Malaysian man, and inviting the viewer to join the character on his search for nationality, or perhaps just have fun.
