A lace wedding dress with leg of mutton sleeves and a flared skirt

This is a cream and white wedding dress, with leg of mutton sleeves and a sculpted bodice. It is form fitted to the knees and ends with a flared skirt, which creates a ‘mermaid’ silhouette. The dress is embellished with lace trimmings on the collar, sleeves, bodice and hemline. This piece belonged to Ms. Josephine Tan, who made it personally for her wedding in 1990. It took her four months to complete it. As the lace dress was very heavy, it was initially torn at the shoulders but she rectified it by adding another strip of fabric at the shoulders to secure them. The 1990s saw a wave of personalized wedding dresses in Singapore as women could afford to design and buy their own dresses with the greater availability of cheaper fabrics. Many drew their inspiration from fashion styles of the mid- and late-Victorian eras.
