In this representation the elephant-headed Ganesha is seated atop a double lotus pedestal with his belly touching the ground, his right hand holding a broken tusk and his left holding a modak or sweetmeat. As the remover of obstacles and bestower of good fortune, Ganesha is widely worshipped across India and by the Indian diaspora worldwide. This compact yet detailed representation adheres to the traditional sculptural norms of the Hindu tradition in south India, and similar representations of Ganesha arealso found in Central Java and other regions of Southeast Asia.
