This fumi-e (picture treading) plaque depicts the body of Christ on the lap of his mother, Mary, after the Crucifixion. It is made of bronze and mounted at the corners on a wooden base. In the ceremony first conducted in Nagasaki in the early 17th century, citizens of Nagasaki or suspected converts were required to walk on the fumi-e as proof of their renunciation of Christianity.
