Chinese woodblock prints mounted together depicting the Military Door Gods Qin Qiong (秦琼) and Yuchi Gong (尉迟恭)

Depicted here are the generals of the Tang Dynasty emperor Tang Taizong (唐太宗), who became Military Door Gods. The looks of a pair of Military Door Gods are usually contrasting. Yuchi Gong in the left print looks fierce as compared to Qin Qiong who looks more gentle. They face each other in order to keep an eye on the spirits attempting to pass through the doors. The gods carry serrated banners, which are props used by army generals in Chinese operas to give the impression of power. Prints of Military Door Gods are usually modelled after famous heroes, but some may just depict a general-like figure, such as those seen in Chinese operas. The prints were produced in Taohuawu, a village in Suzhou province in China famous for its New Year prints.
