Regency rosewood card table

This rosewood card table was made in the Regency period (1811–1820) and is marked by a sophisticated elegance. A typical campaign (or knock-down) furniture of that period, it has a foldable top and a set of rotatable legs that allows it to function as a side table when folded up. This combination of style and practicality made such furniture a favourite among colonial administrators. The English Regency style was influenced by the Romantic movement, which placed emphasis on appreciating the individual, nature and the expression of raw emotions. It drew inspiration from an eclectic mix of aesthetic styles including ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman Neoclassicism, Gothic Revival, Turkish and Orient-inspired Chinoiserie. A major patron of the style was the Prince Regent (r. 1811–1820; later ruling as George IV, r. 1820–1830) himself.
