Founder of iCAN (Indonesia Contemporary Art Network), Titarubi, born in 1968, has been an artist since 1988. Based in Yogyakarta, she works in various media such as ceramics, and different genres such as assemblage and installation, injecting her personal interpretation of the characteristics of each medium into her art pieces. She has participated in several regional biennales and has exhibited in Germany, Australia and Korea. ‘Bayang-bayang Maha Kecil #9’ (meaning: shadows of the tiniest kind) comprises busts, modelled from the body of Titarubi’s daughter, inscribed with prayers and invocations written in Arabic script to drive off evil spirits. The installation criticizes the way religion is perceived in Indonesia, and indirectly the educational system during the New Order regime, with the unquestioning acceptance of rote learning of religious values, a theme which Titarubi continues to explore in her art.
