Anna Leonowens was recommended by Tan Kim Ching, the Siam Consul in Singapore, to King Mongkut as an English tutor to his wives and children, including Prince (and later King) Chulalongkorn. Her memoirs of her time spent at the Siamese courts is contained in this book, which has been criticised by some for its sensationalistic treatment. This book contains several engraved plates, including several illustrations that were engraved from photographs taken by John Thomson of Chulalongkorn and his royal tonsure.
