This game board is configured for the game of chess on one side and another game on the other. It has protruding compartments on two of the four borders possibly to keep the playing pieces. The game board features the use of ‘sadeli’, a geometric micromosaic consisting of various woods, metals and ivory, as a veneer over the base wooden structure, with other materials in parquetry or as a border for carved sandalwood or ebony panels.Game boards such as this was amongst the first objects encountered by the Europeans in India and was highly sough after as luxury goods for export purposes.
