This is a piece of cotton cloth consisting of various shades of red and green. The decorative motifs are made up of flowers and cranes. The crane is a graceful bird that symbolises status and longevity. It is the second most important bird in the Chinese legend after the phoenix. This cloth could have been used to wrap and protect white lace kebayas from discolouration and infestation when they were not being worn. Textiles such as kebayas were susceptible to attacks from various kinds of insects which fed on the organic material, thus destroying or damaging the original textile.
