Mohammad Din Mohammad (1955-2007) was born in Malacca, Malaysia and immigrated to Singapore when he was two years old. He studied art at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, majoring in Western painting from 1973 to 1976. Mohammad was known for his provocative work which combines Western ideas with his cultural background. His works are also deeply rooted in Sufi mysticism, which he practised throughout his life, and often feature symbols and icons that convey his ideas and Islamic philosophies.Mohammad’s intention of infusing his spiritual energy into his work is executed in a style similar to Impressionism. This painting captures the movement of the orchids with free and fluid brushstrokes. ‘Orchid in the Wind’ is an example of Mohammad’s exploration and investigation into the formal elements of painting, a marked departure from his earlier sculptures and assemblages.
