This low circular table could be referred to as a ‘console table’, which is a local trade name used by collectors of Peranakan Chinese furniture to refer to a type of side table that was found in traditional Peranakan homes. This piece is possibly made of blackwood and has a glass covering on top. It could have been placed in the ‘thia besar’ or front hall of the home. Decorative objects such as European clocks and dolls, Chinese vases or bronze sculptures could have been placed on such tables.
