This skirt has a dramatic design comprising multicoloured vertical stripes and wide bands of supplementary weft, woven zig zags and other interlocking motifs in red, black, purple, yellow and green silk. This design is one of many that could have been made by various communities including Tai Neua, Tai Phuan or Tai Khang. The Tai began to move out of southern China into northern areas of mainland Southeast Asia during the 12th century. The rich textile-weaving legacy remains today, although designs and markets for such textiles are changing with globalisation.
