This ‘bunga’ (flower) hairpin could have been part of a set of three hairpins known as the ‘sanggul tiga batang’ (‘three stick’ bun). The other two hairpins were similar but of differing sizes. They were known as ‘korak kuping’ (ear digger) and had rounded knobs at the top. Thus these pins were also termed as ‘coffin nails’. The two matching hairpins were worn at an angle to each other with the hair wound around them. The ‘bunga’ hairpin had a primarily ornamental function and was used to add aesthetic appeal to the style. This piece is possibly made from gold and its length is adorned with small pieces of diamonds. The head is crafted in a floral design with a purple colour gem at the centre.
