Reclining Figure 2

Born in Malaysia, Ahmad Zakii Anwar (1955) is one of the most sought after contemporary artists in the region, known for his hyper-realist works. After his graduation from MARA Institute of Technology, he worked as a graphic artist first, becoming a full- time artist. An active member of the regional arts scene, his works have appeared in numerous exhibitions since 1975, including a mid career retrospective at Kuala Lumpur in 2008. An introspective artist, Zakii's works are infused with a sense of essentialism. ‘Reclining Figure 2’ is part of a larger body of works where he explores figuration of the human body. Stripped of all baggage and clothing, the human body is depicted monochromatically, presenting the bare essence here. Through a minimalist approach, Zakii’s excellent draughtsmanship skills is seen through the musculature and bone structure depicted here, anatomically precise, against the stark white background, heightening a sense of spirituality.
