This nyonya ware dish has gilt edged chrysanthemum rims and sloping sides. Flowers of the Four Seasons decorate the piece. They include the peony, which symbolises spring, the lotus, which represents summer, the chrysanthemum and the plum blossom which symbolise autumn and winter respectively. These are painted on a rose pink background, a colour which represents happiness, longevity, youthfulness and innocence. The peony motifs however are enclosed in three separate green medallions. There is also a green border filled with symbols from the Eight auspicious Buddhist Emblems along the edges of the rims. The Peranakan Chinese served their pungent, spicy dishes in separate serving plates, and rice on dinner plates. Food was scooped from the serving plates onto the dinner plates to be eaten with the rice.
