This is a piece of red woven betel box lining used to line the inside of the container used to store betel leaves. These were usually made of silver and cylindrical in shape with sloping sides that widened at the rim. These containers could be decorated using repousse and chasing with auspicious motifs such as the phoenix and sprays of peonies.
