Sorting tobacco in lengths and colours

Properly fermented tobacco was sorted and graded in buildings that had plenty of light, as seen in the picture. Skilled coolies sorted and graded twenty one different types of leaves based on colour and surface texture. The coolies were made to sit in an orderly manner under the watchful eyes of the foreman seen here in the right. The coolie would be punished for negligence or tardiness. A book keeper wrote down the bundles that each worker delivered, as these coolies were paid by the bundles they produced.
