Exploration of oil and gas was first conducted in the Dutch East Indies in 1869. In 1890, the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company was formed with the aim of exploiting the resources found in the Dutch East Indies. Later, in 1907, this company merged with the Shell Transport and Trading Company to become the Royal Dutch Shell. Soon it began to dominate the oil industry in the region until the Second World War.
