The Singapore People’s Alliance (SPA) was formed in 1957. Founded and headed by Singapore’s second Chief Minister, Lim Yew Hock, the Alliance was the result of a merger between the Labour Front (LF) and the Liberal Socialist Party (LSP). The SPA took part in the highly anticipated and watershed 1959 Legislative Assembly Election, in which all 51 seats in the legislative body were to be fully elected. It was defeated at the polls, securing only 4 seats against the 43 won by the People’s Action’s Party (PAP) led by Lee Kuan Yew. The PAP went on to form the new government and Lee became Singapore’s first Prime Minister.
