The photograph features Mr. Sng Choon Yee, registrar of trade unions, cutting the tape for the official opening of the Confederation of Singapore Chinese Engineering Tradesmen on 8 August 1953.The Confederation of Singapore Chinese Engineering Tradesmen was a union which intially only accepted male Chinese engineers and mechanics as members. In 1956, it opened its doors to mechanics of other races as well as women working in engineering firms.
