This bowl with floral motif and unusual glaze with misfired effects was made in Si Satchanalai. It is decorated with iron-oxide black painted on a white slip (liquid clay) under a transparent, sometimes greenish glaze. Si Satchanalai was one of the twin royal cities in the Sukhothai period from mid 13th to mid 15th century. Kilns in this region were some of the largest ceramic producers in Southeast Asia at this time. The area was later renamed Sawankhalok. Wares that originated from Sukhothai and Sawankhalok were commonly referred to as 'Sangkalok' or described as 'Sukhothai Period' with the dating given as 14th-15th centuries. Sangkalok wares were also an important producer of glazed ceramics, which were exported throughout Southeast Asia.
