This pair of beaded slippers features women wearing European-style dresses. The beads used were imported from various parts of Europe, particularly Lyons, in the South of France, and Rocaille glass beads were often used. This pair of slippers is part of the material culture of the Peranakan community in Myanmar. Many of them are believed to have come to Myanmar from Penang. As is the case with their regional counterparts, beaded and embroidered slippers were used by the women as an accessory to their traditional Sarong Kebaya outfit. What is distinct about the beaded slippers from Myanmar is their usage of dark greens, blues and whites, colours which are often associated with mourning in the Straits Settlements.
